$500M Gift Will Fuel Next Era of Computer Science at Carnegie Mellon
The Kenneth C. Griffin School of Computer Science to transform education, explore new research, expand compute and AI access, bolster student support

A landmark $500 million gift will transform Carnegie Mellon University’s top-ranked School of Computer Science into a global powerhouse shaping students, research and technologies to address emerging global challenges.
To honor this generous commitment from Citadel founder and CEO Ken Griffin, the school has been renamed the Kenneth C. Griffin School of Computer Science. It is part of a $1 billion philanthropic investment in Carnegie Mellon’s mission in Pittsburgh, supporting a broader $3 billion commitment — the largest in higher education history — that includes building a new campus in Miami. The remaining $500 million of the Pittsburgh investment will provide flexible support for the university’s highest priorities.
“We are profoundly grateful for Ken’s visionary support,” said CMU President Farnam Jahanian. “This investment empowers our exceptional faculty and students to push the boundaries of discovery and ensure our university continues to lead at this moment of profound global transformation.”
The Griffin School of Computer Science will push forward education, research and technological development in an era when computing is no longer a specialized field but part of everyday life. It will rethink how computer science is taught, initiate research in new fields, provide unparalleled access to AI tools and offer student support to continue to draw the best and brightest.
The gift will stand up state-of-the-art compute resources — GPUs, servers, storage, networking capabilities — for researchers in the Griffin School of Computer Science. This critical infrastructure enables the school to create and use the next generation of research tools.

This gift builds on that strength. It gives our faculty and students the resources to ask bigger questions, explore new directions and continue leading.”
